Where do ideas come from - 2

I was stuck in a lengthy traffic jam the other day.  Usual stop/start, engines pothering fumes, large van ahead blocking my view...  A massive booming bass beat from one of the vehicles, the sound level loud enough to vibrate fillings...

I checked my rear view mirror, to see a white haired couple, very upright, reminding me irresistibly of the  pair in Grant Wood's painting 'American Gothic'.  Don't know why, something about their stance...

Well, I thought, it can't be them boom-boxing their eardrums away.

And then I thought...  What if?

What if this elderly, slightly spooky looking couple were playing the booming rock music?  What story would go with that?

What if they being forced to drive somewhere, the kidnapper hidden in the back seat, insisting they dial up the volume on his favourite radio channel...

What if they were alien invaders with enough knowledge to think they were blending in but not enough to get it right...

What if they were zombies, stole a car, not interested in the music, only concerned to hunt and feed...

And then the lights changed at the roadworks ahead and I put pedal to the floor and shot away.

I spent most of my life not realising I was a writer.  I just thought everybody's minds worked like mine.  On some level I had a vague idea that the conversations with people who weren't there might just put me in the crazy category, so I kept quiet.  Besides, the people in my head were usually more interesting which was never going to win me friends out there in the reality sphere.  Fiction has always seemed to offer more interest than the real world and finally I realised - this is how writers think!  Normal people don't have these thoughts.  So, I had the imagination and the crazy thoughts.  The only thing needed to turn me into a writer was to put pen to paper...  Or, in my case, fingers to keypad.  Here goes!
